| Constructed on the site of a former Boston State Hospital, the UMass Biologic Laboratory signaled the first step in the redevelopment of this underutilized Boston property.
| The new building, driveway, and parking lot were integrated into the site in an effort to maintain as many large existing trees as possible. The primary building entrance is inviting to both the main road in front of the site and secondary roads within the property. Pressley Associates designed the entrance drive to highlight a large existing oak and lead to a drop-off at the front entrance. Mature trees and low maintenance plantings integrate the new landscape with the surrounding woodlands. The terraced parking lot minimizes disruption to the topography and screens parked cars from the main road. Numerous evergreen trees planted on the edge of the site help to screen the immense cooling towers and utility equipment needed for the laboratory. | UMass Worcester
