Initial Concept | Pressley Associates designed a linear park on the site of a former mill claimed by overgrown volunteer vegetation, including restoration and stabilization of canal walls, a new canal walk, and extensive landscape and historic interpretive design elements.
Lasting Impact | Lowell is a National Historical Park commemorating the “phenomenon of 19th century engineering, human effort, and city planning” with a 5.8 mile canal system, which is a National Engineering Landmark. Western Canal Park is a component of the larger pedestrian walkway system of Lowell. The park development, which featured protection and incorporation of extant historic remnants into the park design, has increased the accessibility along Western Canal, the Merrimack River, and Lowell downtown areas. This project, in association with Lowell Riverwalk, received a BSLA Honor Award in Waterfront Design and an International Excellence on the Waterfront Award. Client | Frederick R. Harris for the
City of Lowell, Massachusetts
