Initial Concept | In 1976, this formerly derelict section of Boston was reborn as the first “Festival Marketplace” and expanded in 1986 with the Marketplace Center Development.
Lasting Impact | Since 1976, Faneuil Hall Marketplace has hosted over 15 million visitors a year from all corners of the globe and has served as the inspiration for copies in most major cities. In a poll published in Landscape Architecture magazine in the 1980’s, the two most important landscape architectural works in the previous ten years were Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston and Freeway Park in Seattle. This design received the National Landscape Award, which was presented to Bill Pressley by Roslyn Carter, Lady Bird Johnson, and Jacqueline Kennedy at the White House. Marketplace Center won several awards, including the 1987 Boston Society of Landscape Architects Award in Urban Design, while Faneuil Hall has won the 1979 AAN National Landscape Award
